Grand Cru Style Sancerre

Domaine J.Ballard Chapuis la Vallon Sancerre blanc 2005 normally $47

Domaine Ballard Chapuis is located in the commune of Bué. The la Vallon vineyard has pebbly limestone soils known as ‘caillottes’ which gives the wines a more intense minerally palate. Unofficially this is regarded as a ‘Grand Cru’ site for Sancerre. The wine displays crisp tight structure and mineral aromatics but also that familiar Sauvignon Blanc herbaceousness. An excellent representation of traditional terroir and modern winemaking.

Cédrick Bardin Pouilly Fumé 2005 $38

The Pouilly Fumé will go well with a firm white-flesh fish, such as Blue Eyed Cod. It displays delicate mineral, flinty and herbaceous notes on the nose. A lovely textured mouth-feel, rich and racy; displaying good length and line. 93 points. Outstanding value for money from a great producer.

The 2005 vintage in Loire
One of the driest and hottest years for three decades in the Loire Valley, with only half the normal rainfall. Loire vinerons were delighted with the quality of the grapes picked in ideal harvest conditions and the region reported lower-than-normal yields. Already being greeted as a ‘great year’ it is reported to be ‘close to 1996 or 1990’
