Couly Dutheil – Chinon, Loire

The Chinon region, located south of the town of Tours in the Touraine district, is famous for producing red wines from Cabernet Franc. It is situated on three types of soils and suits the production of different styles of wines. The sandy gravelly plains along the Vienne River produce light fruity wines. The clay and siliceous slopes and flat lands produce finer more subtle wines and finally the clay and chalk hills produce rich intense wines suitable for ageing. With access to 2000 hectares of vineyards around Chinon, Couly-Dutheil produces all three styles exceptionally well. Set in the heart of Chinon they produce wines from inside caves that date from the 10th century. They sell the majority of their wines to French restaurants and only export 10%. Whilst Clos du L’Echo is their flagship red sourced from 60 year old vines and has great ageing capacity. Loire’s Cabernet Franc is the most underrated red wine in France displaying lovely elegant fruit characters and soft well-balanced medium bodied wines on the palate. Due to their lower levels of tannins they are ideal food partners whilst maintaining a fruit character that will please everyone.
